State of Personal AI Agents 2026

An independent census of 199 personal AI agents across 22 categories — built from primary sources (vendor pricing pages, trust centers, public benchmark leaderboards). Every datapoint links to its source. Every claim has a verifiable origin. Use the numbers below freely with attribution.

Headline findings

  1. Only 36.7% of all 199 personal AI agents have a published SOC 2 Type II attestation.
  2. Of agents with verified buyer-grade data, 59.8% have SOC 2 Type II — but only 17.2% support HIPAA via BAA.
  3. 54.3% of personal AI agents offer a genuine free tier — not a trial.
  4. Only 8.2% of buyer-grade agents support self-hosted or on-prem deployment.
  5. 41% of buyer-grade agents explicitly do NOT train on customer data; another 3.3% allow opt-out.

Security and compliance adoption

Of the 199 agents in scope, 122 (61.3%) have full buyer-grade data verified at the vendor's trust center or security page. Adoption rates among that subset:

SOC 2 Type II
59.8%
ISO 27001
34.4%
HIPAA (BAA)
17.2%
GDPR
96.7%
Self-hosted / on-prem
8.2%

SOC 2 across all agents:

Just 73 of 199 agents publish a SOC 2 Type II attestation — 36.7% of the broader market. The rest are either in-progress, smaller vendors who haven't pursued attestation, or open-source.

Self-hosted is rare:

Only 10 agents in our buyer-grade cohort offer a self-hosted or on-prem deployment option. Tabnine, Windsurf Enterprise, and DeepSeek (open-weight) are the only mainstream choices for air-gapped environments.

Training-on-customer-data policy

How vendors handle inputs (your code, customer records, email content). Among the 122 agents with verified buyer-grade data:

50

Never trains on customer inputs (most enterprise tiers, GitHub Copilot Business+, Tabnine all plans, Sierra)

4

Opt-out available — trains by default but you can disable (Anthropic, Cursor, Replit consumer, Windsurf paid)

2

Trains by default with no opt-out (Midjourney lower tiers, DeepSeek API)

143

Unknown / not published (vendors who haven't shipped a public policy yet)

Pricing distribution

Where each agent falls based on its lowest paid tier (or $0 for agents with a genuine free tier). 108 agents (54.3% of 199) offer free use that isn't a 7-day trial.

AI models powering personal AI agents

Top 10 model families by frequency of use across all 199 agents. Many agents use multiple models — Cursor, Windsurf, and GitHub Copilot let users pick per task — so totals exceed 199.

Agents per category

22 categories ranked by agent count. Productivity and customer-support are the deepest, reflecting where personal AI agents are most actively shipping in 2026.

Methodology

  • Scope: all 199 agents currently listed in our public directory across 22 categories. Excludes 8 agents previously removed for being unverifiable in the vendor universe.
  • Pricing: lowest paid-tier monthly rate scraped from each vendor's pricing page in May 2026 (we re-verify whenever a category page is updated). Agents with both annual and monthly options use the monthly figure.
  • Free tier: requires an actual $0 plan that does not expire. 7-day trials are excluded.
  • Security & compliance: only counted when published on the vendor's trust center or security page. We do not infer or pattern-match. The 122 agents in the "buyer-grade" cohort each have a citation URL recorded on their detail page and are subject to quarterly re-verification.
  • Training policy: drawn from each vendor's privacy policy, terms of service, or trust center. Where the policy differs by tier (e.g. GitHub Copilot Free vs. Business), we use the policy for the most-purchased tier.
  • Models: reflects each agent's own self-disclosure of which model(s) it uses. Variants of the same family (Claude Opus 4.5 vs 4.7) are grouped under a family label for readability.
  • Recomputation: all stats above are deterministically generated from src/data/agents.ts via scripts/generate-state-report.ts, so any data correction triggers an automatic refresh on the next site build.
